Ancient Knowledge Systems of Bharat
The world's greatest repository of timeless wisdom
The Vedas — Foundation of All Knowledge
The four Vedas — Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, and Atharvaveda — are the foundational scriptures of Sanatan Dharma and among the oldest known texts in the world. Far from being merely religious texts, the Vedas contain advanced knowledge of mathematics, astronomy, medicine, linguistics, philosophy, statecraft, and the nature of consciousness. The Rigveda, composed around 1500 BCE or earlier, is the world's oldest known literary work still in use.
Vedic Mathematics — The World's Most Elegant System
Vedic Mathematics, based on 16 Sutras (aphorisms) rediscovered from the Vedas, offers a fast, creative, and flexible approach to mathematical computation. Bharat gave the world the concept of zero (Shunya), the decimal number system, and algebra — foundational contributions without which modern science and technology would be impossible. Aryabhatta calculated the value of pi and the circumference of the Earth with remarkable accuracy in 499 CE.
Ayurveda — The Science of Life
Ayurveda, the world's oldest comprehensive medical system, is a 5,000-year-old science of life that treats the whole person — body, mind, and spirit. Based on the concept of three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), Ayurveda uses herbal medicine, diet, yoga, massage, and lifestyle practices to maintain and restore health. Sushruta Samhita, composed over 2,500 years ago, contains detailed descriptions of over 300 surgical procedures and 120 surgical instruments — establishing Bharat as the birthplace of surgery.
Astronomy & Cosmology
Ancient Bharatiya astronomers had sophisticated understanding of the cosmos. Aryabhatta (476 CE) correctly stated that the Earth rotates on its axis and calculated the length of a solar year as 365.358 days. Brahmagupta (598 CE) explained the concept of gravity centuries before Newton. The Vedic literature contains remarkably accurate descriptions of planetary motions, eclipses, and the age of the universe. The Jantar Mantar observatories built in the 18th century remain among the world's most sophisticated pre-modern astronomical instruments.
Yoga & Consciousness Sciences
Yoga, codified by the sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras around 400 CE, is a comprehensive system for the transformation of human consciousness. It encompasses physical postures (asanas), breathing practices (pranayama), ethical conduct (yamas and niyamas), meditation (dhyana), and ultimately Samadhi — a state of profound inner stillness and unity. Today, with over 300 million practitioners worldwide and UN-recognised International Day of Yoga on June 21, Yoga is Bharat's greatest gift to global well-being.
