Indian Knowledge Systems

The world's most profound repository of wisdom across all domains of human inquiry

What Are Indian Knowledge Systems?

Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) encompass the vast corpus of knowledge produced by the civilizations of Bharat across thousands of years. Far from being limited to philosophy or religion, IKS spans mathematics, astronomy, medicine, architecture, linguistics, statecraft, economics, ecology, agriculture, metallurgy, music, dance, drama, and psychology. The National Education Policy 2020 has mandated the integration of IKS into modern curricula, recognizing that this ancient wisdom contains solutions to many contemporary challenges.

Philosophy — The Shad Darshanas

The six great schools of Vedic philosophy (Shad Darshanas) — Nyaya (logic), Vaisheshika (atomic theory), Samkhya (evolution of consciousness and matter), Yoga (union with the divine), Mimamsa (ritual philosophy), and Vedanta (non-dual metaphysics) — represent one of the most sophisticated philosophical traditions ever developed. They grappled with questions of epistemology, ontology, ethics, and the nature of consciousness millennia before Western philosophy developed similar inquiries.

Arthashastra — Science of Statecraft

Kautilya's Arthashastra, written around 300 BCE, is one of the world's first and most comprehensive treatises on statecraft, economic policy, military strategy, and governance. It covers topics including taxation, market regulation, labor law, foreign policy, intelligence services, and the welfare of the state. Its sophistication matches and in many ways surpasses contemporaneous political thought anywhere in the world, and it remains deeply relevant to modern governance.

Vastu Shastra & Architecture

Vastu Shastra is the ancient Bharatiya science of architecture and spatial arrangement, based on the principle of harmony between human beings and the forces of nature. It provides guidelines for the orientation, proportion, spatial arrangement, and layout of buildings that align with cosmic energies and promote health, prosperity, and well-being. The mathematical principles behind temple architecture — from the Nagara style of the North to the Dravidian style of the South — represent some of the world's most sophisticated architectural knowledge.

Panini & Sanskrit Grammar

Panini's Ashtadhyayi, composed around 400 BCE, is the world's first formal grammar — a set of 3,959 grammatical rules (sutras) that completely describe the Sanskrit language with mathematical precision. Modern linguists and computer scientists regard it as one of the greatest intellectual achievements in human history. The formal recursive grammar structures described by Panini anticipate the formal grammars used in computer programming languages by over 2,400 years. Noam Chomsky has acknowledged its profound influence on modern linguistics.
