Economy of Bharat
The world's fastest-growing major economy reclaiming its historic position
The World's Fastest-Growing Major Economy
Bharat is currently the world's 5th largest economy by nominal GDP and the 3rd largest by purchasing power parity (PPP), and is projected to become the world's 3rd largest nominal economy by 2027-2030. With a GDP growth rate consistently above 6-7% annually, Bharat is the fastest-growing major economy in the world. Historically, Bharat was the world's largest economy for most of the last 2,000 years, contributing 25-33% of global GDP before colonial exploitation.
Key Economic Sectors
Bharat's economy is diversified across services (contributing ~55% of GDP), industry (~28%), and agriculture (~17%). The IT and software services sector, led by companies like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and HCL, contributes approximately $250 billion annually and employs over 5 million professionals. The pharmaceutical sector is the world's largest supplier of generic medicines. Banking, financial services, retail, real estate, and infrastructure are other major growth drivers.
Foreign Trade & Investment
Bharat's total merchandise trade exceeds $1.5 trillion annually, with major exports including software services, engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, gems and jewellery, chemicals, and agricultural products. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has increased substantially, with Bharat receiving over $84 billion in FDI in 2021-22. Free Trade Agreements with UAE, Australia, and ongoing negotiations with the EU, UK, and Canada are expanding Bharat's trade relationships.
Financial Inclusion & Jan Dhan
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, launched in 2014, opened over 500 million bank accounts for previously unbanked Indians — the largest financial inclusion program in history, recognized by the Guinness World Records. Combined with Aadhaar biometric identity (1.4 billion enrolled) and mobile phones, the JAM Trinity (Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile) has transformed welfare delivery, eliminated corruption in subsidies, and empowered hundreds of millions of citizens with formal financial access.
Vision 2047 — Viksit Bharat
Bharat's national vision is to become a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047 — the centenary of independence — with a GDP target of $30 trillion, making it the world's second or third largest economy. This vision encompasses universal literacy, elimination of poverty, world-class infrastructure, a clean environment, and Bharat reclaiming its historic position as the world's leading civilization. The Vishwaguru Bharat mission aligns with this national aspiration.
