Education in Bharat
From the world's first universities to the knowledge economy of tomorrow
Nalanda & Takshashila — The World's First Universities
Bharat established the world's first universities thousands of years ago. Takshashila (Taxila), dating back to at least 600 BCE, attracted students from across Asia and was a great center of learning in medicine, mathematics, law, warfare, and philosophy. Nalanda University, established in the 5th century CE in Bihar, was a residential university that housed over 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers from 20 countries, with a magnificent library of over 9 million manuscripts called Dharmaganja. Both represent Bharat's extraordinary tradition of open, universal, multidisciplinary education.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) System
The IITs are among the world's most competitive and prestigious technical universities. With an acceptance rate below 2%, they produce engineers, scientists, and entrepreneurs who lead global corporations, research institutions, and governments. IIT alumni include Sundar Pichai (CEO of Google), Satya Nadella (CEO of Microsoft), and hundreds of CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, startup founders, Nobel laureates, and world-class researchers. Today there are 23 IITs across Bharat.
National Education Policy 2020
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the first comprehensive overhaul of India's education system since 1986, is transforming education at every level. Key features include mother-tongue instruction in early years, multi-disciplinary higher education, emphasis on critical thinking and creativity, integration of arts and vocational education, development of Indian languages, promotion of ancient knowledge systems, and a 5+3+3+4 curricular structure replacing the old 10+2 system.
Gurukul & Vedic Education
The ancient Gurukul system of education was holistic — students lived with their teacher (Guru), learning not just academic subjects but also character, discipline, life skills, and spiritual wisdom. This tradition produced extraordinary thinkers including Chanakya (political philosophy), Aryabhatta (astronomy and mathematics), Sushruta (surgery), and Charaka (medicine). Today, there is a strong revival movement to restore elements of this holistic, character-based education within modern institutions.
Digital Education & EdTech
Bharat has become a global leader in digital education and EdTech. Platforms like BYJU'S, Unacademy, upGrad, and Vedantu have reached tens of millions of students. The government's DIKSHA platform and PM e-VIDYA initiative deliver free digital learning to hundreds of millions. With over 900 universities, 40,000 colleges, and over 1,000 government schools being upgraded to smart schools, Bharat is determined to deliver world-class education to every child in every corner of the nation.
