Innovation & Technology in Bharat

The ancient innovator reclaims its place at the forefront of global progress

From Ancient Innovation to Digital India

Bharat's tradition of innovation stretches back thousands of years — from the Indus Valley civilization's sophisticated urban planning, drainage systems, and standardized weights, to the world's first university at Nalanda and Takshashila, to the development of zero, decimal mathematics, astronomy, and surgery. Today, this spirit of innovation continues in the digital age. Bharat is the world's third-largest startup ecosystem with over 100 unicorns, and is a global leader in IT services, space technology, and digital payments.

ISRO — Reaching for the Stars

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has established Bharat as a leading space nation at a fraction of the cost of other programs. Chandrayaan-1 discovered water on the Moon. Chandrayaan-3 made Bharat the first nation to land near the Moon's South Pole. Mangalyaan reached Mars on its first attempt — the cheapest Mars mission in history. The Aditya-L1 solar mission placed Bharat among the rare nations studying the Sun. ISRO's 'frugal engineering' approach is admired worldwide.

Digital India & UPI

Bharat's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is the world's most advanced real-time digital payment system, processing over 10 billion transactions per month. Built by the National Payments Corporation of India, UPI has enabled financial inclusion for hundreds of millions of citizens and is now being adopted by countries around the world. The Digital India initiative has connected over 600,000 villages with broadband, moved government services online, and established Bharat as the world's largest digitally connected democracy.

Startups & the Entrepreneurship Revolution

Bharat's startup ecosystem is the world's third-largest, with over 100,000 DPIIT-recognized startups creating over 1 million jobs. Sectors like fintech, edtech, healthtech, agritech, and SaaS are seeing explosive growth. Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, and Chennai are emerging as global innovation hubs. India's tech professionals power Silicon Valley and global corporations, while a new generation of entrepreneurs is solving uniquely Indian and global problems from within Bharat.

Make in India & Manufacturing Renaissance

The Make in India initiative, launched in 2014, aims to transform Bharat into a global manufacturing hub. Bharat is now the world's largest manufacturer of mobile phones (second only to China), a major producer of automobiles, pharmaceuticals (the 'Pharmacy of the World' supplying 20% of global generic medicines), textiles, and steel. The Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme is drawing global manufacturers to establish production in Bharat across 14 key sectors.
