Ganga (The Sacred River)

Ganga (The Sacred River)

About this Mission

Vision & Significance

The Ganga is more than a river — she is a deity, a mother, and the spiritual artery of Indian civilisation. From Gangotri glacier to the Bay of Bengal, she sustains agriculture, fisheries, industry, and the spiritual lives of hundreds of millions. Yet she is severely polluted by sewage, industrial waste, and ritual debris.

Restoration Strategy:
  • Sewage Treatment: Advocating for 100% sewage treatment in all cities and towns along the Ganga to prevent untreated waste from entering the river.
  • Industrial Pollution Control: Demanding strict enforcement of pollution norms for industries discharging waste into the Ganga and its tributaries.
  • Ecological Flow: Ensuring minimum ecological flow at all points along the river to sustain aquatic life and maintain the river's self-purifying capacity.
  • Ghat and Cremation Reform: Promoting electric cremation, eco-friendly ritual practices, and ghat cleanliness to reduce pollution from religious activities.

Our Initiatives

Vishwa Guru Bharat serves Maa Ganga through clean-up campaigns, awareness drives, ghat cleaning, and advocacy for stronger pollution controls.

  • Ganga Aarti Awareness: Using the platform of daily Ganga Aarti ceremonies to spread awareness about river conservation among devotees.
  • Ghat Cleaning Drives: Organising regular cleaning of sacred ghats (river steps) in Varanasi, Haridwar, Prayagraj, and other pilgrimage cities.
  • Tributary Restoration: Working to clean and restore Ganga tributaries — Yamuna, Gomti, Gandak — which contribute significantly to main river pollution.
  • Eco-Friendly Rituals: Promoting biodegradable offerings, eco-friendly idol immersion, and responsible ritual practices that respect the river.

Serve Maa Ganga

Ganga is our mother — she has nourished us for millennia. Now she needs our help. Every act of river protection is an act of devotion.

Your Seva:
  • Keep Ganga Clean: Never dump waste, plastics, or non-biodegradable offerings into the Ganga or any river.
  • Use Eco-Friendly Materials: Choose biodegradable offerings and natural materials for rituals performed at the river.
  • Join Ghat Clean-ups: Volunteer for our regular ghat cleaning drives in pilgrimage cities along the Ganga.
  • Donate: Fund our river clean-up campaigns, eco-friendly ritual awareness programs, and tributary restoration projects.
